Bag End

Bag End

As one might suspect, Bag End has been one of our most popular #LOTR designs, so I thought I'd give a little behind-the-scenes on part of the design process.

I was working on this design in the springtime, and from my front porch, could see the cascade of phlox and other springtime blooms in my neighbor's front yard. This seemed like just the sort of the thing that the Gaffer would enjoy and would make a beautiful framing device for a well-tended garden, while also allowing for the introduction of more color into the design.

To try to replicate this look, I turned to an unusual type of glass called a "ring mottle". Originally created by Tiffany in the early 1900's, this striking style is created by introducing intentional variations into the molten glass. As it cools, some areas contract or crystallize differently than others, which form these amazing ring ling shapes. Just perfect for the look of spring flowers!

If you've enjoyed this peek "behind the glass", what sorts of things would you like to see next?
